Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 June 2026
This policy explains what personal data Find Your Commuter (the "app", "we", "us") collects when you use it, why we collect it, and what rights you have over it. Plain English, no legal jargon unless we have to.
1. Who we are & data controller
Find Your Commuter is a dating / social app for people who ride the London Underground. The data controller for the purposes of UK GDPR and the EU GDPR is Scott Murphy.
- Contact: support@findyourcommuter.com
- Postal address: Suite RA01, 195–197 Wood Street, London, E17 3NU
- ICO registration number: ZC185699
2. What we collect
To make the app work we collect the following from you:
- Account info — email address, encrypted password (we never see the plain password).
- Profile info — first name, date of birth (to confirm you're 18+), gender, bio, job title, photos you upload, looking-for preference, "mood" you set.
- Commute info — the stations you board at, the lines you take, the approximate times of your commute, the days of the week. This is the core of what the app matches on.
- Activity — Touch Ins you send and receive, matches, messages, feed posts you publish, reactions (like "Wink") you give.
- Reports — when you report another user or their content, we store your report, the target, reason, and optional free-text detail.
- Device & technical info — app version, OS type, crash reports (via Sentry). We do NOT track your precise location.
We do not collect: your contacts, your calendar, your real-time location, your other installed apps, your browsing outside the app.
3. How we use it
- Matching — your commute info is used to rank potential matches whose routes overlap yours.
- Showing profiles — your photos, bio, first name, age, job title, badges, and approximate route are shown to other users (subject to your privacy toggles).
- Messaging — your messages are stored so you and your match can read them.
- Safety — reports and blocks are used to moderate the platform and keep everyone safe.
- Service improvement — crash reports (via Sentry) help us fix bugs.
- Account lifecycle — we need your email to let you sign in and recover your account.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers.
3a. Our lawful bases (UK/EU GDPR Article 6)
- Performance of a contract — providing the core service: your account, profile, matching, and messaging. Without this data the app cannot function.
- Consent — for processing the special-category data inherent in a dating app (your profile, preferences, and activity can imply information about your sex life or sexual orientation). You give explicit consent by creating a profile and choosing your "looking for" preference, and you can withdraw it at any time by deleting your account.
- Legitimate interests — keeping the platform safe (moderation, reports, blocks, fraud/abuse prevention) and fixing bugs via crash diagnostics, balanced against your rights.
- Legal obligation — responding to valid law-enforcement requests and meeting our legal duties.
Because dating-app data is treated as special-category data under Article 9, we rely on your explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a)) to process it. You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account.
4. Who we share it with
- Supabase (our backend provider) — stores the data on our behalf, in EU/UK data centres. Supabase Privacy.
- Sentry (crash reporting, US-based) — receives diagnostic and crash data, which may include a user identifier, technical breadcrumbs, and IP address, to help us diagnose errors. Sentry Privacy.
- Other users of Find Your Commuter — they see what you've chosen to show on your profile (photos, name, age unless hidden, bio, badges, approximate route).
- Law enforcement — we comply with valid legal requests (court orders, subpoenas) but require them in writing.
5. Storage, security & international transfers
Your data is stored in encrypted form at rest on Supabase infrastructure in the UK / EU. Connections use TLS (HTTPS).
Some of our processors operate outside the UK/EEA. In particular, Sentry (crash diagnostics) processes data in the United States. Where data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards — the UK International Data Transfer Agreement / Addendum and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) — to protect it.
You're responsible for keeping your password strong and not sharing your account.
5a. How long we keep your data
We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, photos, matches, and messages are removed within 30 days. Some data is retained longer where we have a legal or safety obligation — e.g. records of reports filed against an account, and encrypted backups — for up to 12 months.
6. Your rights
Under UK/EU GDPR you have the following rights over your personal data:
- Access — email support@findyourcommuter.com with "Data access request" and we'll send you a machine-readable export within 30 days.
- Rectification (correction) — most fields you can edit yourself in the app (Profile → Edit); otherwise contact us.
- Erasure (deletion) — tap "Delete my account" in the Profile tab. This removes your profile, photos, matches, and messages within 30 days (subject to the retention in §5a).
- Restriction of processing — you can ask us to pause processing of your data while a concern is resolved.
- Data portability — you can ask for your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
- Objection — you can object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Withdrawal of consent — withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account; this doesn't affect processing already carried out.
- Lodge a complaint — if you're in the UK, with the ICO (ico.org.uk).
7. Children
This app is for adults only. You must be 18 or older. We reject sign-ups where date-of-birth is under 18. If you believe a minor is using the app, report them to us and we'll remove the account.
8. Cookies / trackers
The mobile app doesn't use cookies. This web page doesn't set any tracking cookies.
9. Changes to this policy
We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we make changes. For material changes (e.g. new data use), we'll notify you in-app before the change takes effect.
